In my forest I have found only one reasonable-sized Sassafras tree, in the SW section of Lot A, with a circumference at chest-height of 3ft 6". There are many others but they are all sapling or seedling-sized. This one larger specimen is very unusual in that it only has one type of leaf, the single-lobed type. All other Sassafras tree I have seen carry one, two, and three-lobed leaves, mostly three. Because of this I first thought this tree was a Sourwood with unusual bark, but inspection of the yellow autumn leaves at its base showed smooth edges (as opposed to Sourwood leaves which have very finely-toothed edges.
There are also three smaller specimens just to the south of the ridge on Lot 9. The larger two of these have a circumference at chest height of 2ft 2.5" and 2ft 4.5".
The single-lobed leaves from my largest tree are shown in the first picture below. The second picture shows a more standard tri-lobed Sassafras leaf (from a sapling).
