We planted this mail-order tree, from TyTy, in February 2013. It arrived as an ugly pole with all side branches and the top pruned off, and after planting, began sprouting leaves directly from the stem.
It has grown steadily each year and not had any issues, apart from 5 or so bagworms in 2016 which I quickly plucked off before they could do any damage. This tree, like the Bald Cypress, becomes a lovely rusty brown in the autumn - the picture below is from December 2nd 2016.
...and the picture below is from November 12th 2017.
Again a nice rusty autumn color in early December 2018.
In February 2019, I was concerned. I had removed the tree protector from the base of the trunk (as the trunk had outgrown it) a couple of weeks prior, and the bark had suddenly been stripped off all around the base of the tree - no clue what could have done it - I have never seen a squirrel in my back-yard and haven't seen a rabbit for at least a year. I hoped that the damage was superficial as the sapwood had not been breached and a dry corky layer was still present.
