Bitternut Hickory: early July 2021 (first picture), early July 2020 (second picture) - looking sickly and chlorotic. By the summer of 2022 it had no leaves at all and I did not take a picture. 2023 was not much better.
I purchased this tree from Mail Order Natives (supposedly a Nutmeg Hickory) and it arrived in a small plug of earth which was keeping the roots intact. Only a couple of leaves remained as it was late in the year, but enough to confirm it was a hickory. I planted it at the back of the yard on November 9th 2019.
The hickory leafed out in early March 2020.
In early April 2020 it was still doing very well.
The undersides of the newer leaflets had tiny whitish scales that looked like crystals of salt - the images below are from April 10th 2020. These scales quickly disappeared as the leaves aged.
By May 10th 2020, the Hickory seemed to have stopped growing and the leaves were a little yellowish. On inspection, the buds are bright yellow and valvate, and there are up to 11 leaflets per leaf, indicating that this is actually very likely a Bitternut Hickory! I therefore changed the title of this page to Bitternut Hickory!
